ROAR #3 : THE LOVELY BONES

The Lovely Bones By Alice Sebold 

 p. 30-100

       As I continued reading the Lovely bones the police is discovering a lot since what had happened to Salmon known as Susie. The Police found her blood into the ground where Mr. Harvey made the underground getaway place but, they didn't find her body. They found a lot of her stuff that she had left behind in there like her copy To Kill A Mockingbird, the paper she had written on Orthello, her notes from class, and a love note from Ray Singh. Since Rays letter was found there he became a suspect but he had an alibi. Since he was different that didn't help him. The Police also found her belongings under ground and they finally issued  that someone had done this to her. Her family vent they're feelings differently. The mom gets very dramatic and the father sinks his face into the their dogs fur. Her sister just stops herself from crying and exercises a lot to hide her feelings. While all of this is going on, Susie's murderer Mr. Harvey continues to build doll houses, which is his job and keeps his innocent face.

     Also Susie is in heaven which is the best place she has ever been in. Whatever she wants she would have and she had a roommate in heaven. Holly and her hanged out a lot they would see souls leave the humans body from earth. 

     Susie wants to let her family see her because her father has finally started showin that his enraged feelings. Susie wishes she could break through to her family and on December 23 and she does. Her father goes to his den to clean it and sees all the ships in bottles he had made. He had always allowed Susie to pull the string that opened the sails of the ships when he was finished. He becomes so enraged that he smashes every single model he made. Not knowing how, at that moment, Susie reveals her face in all the shards of glass that lay everywhere. It is only a second, but her father sees her. He runs for Susie’s bedroom and sobs on her bed. 

"Gently he would draw the one string that still reached out of the bottle's neck, and, voila, the sails all rose, from simple mast to clipper ship" (Sebold 45).

This quote is very significant because this is the part where she reveals herself to her father. It was a tradition she ust to always pull the string of the boat, but he ended up seeing her. I don't think that was a good idea because that gave him so many emotions and made him run to her room to cry. I know she wanted her family to see her but that might have been to much and knowing that she just passed away.

  As I started reading The Lovely Bones it first starts of by Susie explaining herself and her death.  Susie is fourteen and she has changed completely. She was turning into a young lady and boys are looking at her more than before. Shes the oldest from the Salmon sisters.She was coming home from school and she wanted to get home quicker so she went through the cornfield. She was focusing on something completely different that she forget to examine her surroundings. She got startled when she seen Mr. Harley. Mr. Harley was her next door neighbor but they never really socialized with him. He was trying to get to know her and  she didn't really feel as comfortable taking to adults. He asked her if she wanted to go see something really cool and she replied that it isnt  good idea because her mother doesn't like when she gets home after dark. Mr. Harley had looked around and said its already dark outside, so just come itwill only take a few seconds. So she went with him. So Mr. Harley got her to go with him to a hiding place he made underground. Susie is surprised and thought that it was cool that he made that she even said that is neato. So he see's that she is becoming more comfortable so he asked her if she wanted a coke and to see if she can take off her parka. She starts to become nervous and he blocks the entrance, at this point she really scared. Susie is fighting him off as much as she can. She cries and cries out but nobody knows where she is and he just forces her to be quiet by stuffing the hat with bells her mother had made her into her mouth.Mr. Harley makes her say that she loves him even though she knows that she is going to die. It's a matter of seconds that he was going to kill her.After that Mr. Harley rapes Susie and after he stabs her to death and cuts her body up into small pieces. When he was ickin up after himself he left her elbow which was found by the dog of the house. The only clue that was left and it had corn on it. Mr. Harley was the only person who owned the cornfield.

  Once everyone finds out that she is dead everyone is paying their respects and especiaqlly Mr. Harley which goes to her mother and said I hope they get that sick monster. knowing that he's the evil monster.

"Mr. Harley told her the usual: "I hope they get the Bastard. I'm sorry for your lost." "( Sebold 8).

After reading this i despise that petafile so much, I cant believe he would do such an evil thing to Susie, she was so innocent and how can Susie be so irresponsible. She should have studied her surroundings and knew that being with a complete stranger was a bad idea. Especially if her parents dont really talk to him. Susie now is in heaven and everyone in her school went to see her. She wasn't popular but everyone felt a loss when it came to her death. She should have just went straight home knowing that it's dark already she should have just ran home. I just want to know, Why did Mr. Harley leave that evidence ? , and how did the dog find it when it was under ground?

    As I continue reading Jane is about to marry Mr. Rochester and there were walking together to the church. While they were walking to the Church together there were two people outside of the church reading the headstones in the churchyard cemetery. When Jane and Mr. Rochester were about to say I do the priest ask if anyone objects please say so or forever hold your peace and one of the strangers objected. Mr. Rochester tries too continue with the wedding but, the stranger goes on and tells the story of how Mr. Rochester is still married to a creole women for fifteen years in Jamaica. They also discover that Mr. Rochester is married to Mr. Mason's sister Bertha. Mr. Rochester tells the truth and tells them yes everything is true. No one knew about his wife because she is mad and he keeps her locked away under the care of Grace Pole. Mr. Rochester takes the group to Thornfield to see Bertha and she tries to strangle him, Jane is mad and copes with her emotions by locking herself in her room and praying to God. After that she fell asleep for a while when she woke up she realized that she wants to leave Thornfield. When she walks out of the room Mr. Rochester is waiting outside the room for her. He asked her for forgiveness and says he never meant to hurt her. Jane forgave him and he asked her another proposal to leave England and live together on the South of France. Jane says no to him because as long Bertha is his wife she cant be noting more to him, he replies by saying he doesn't consider himself married. She thinks to herself and says should I leave the only man who loved me and treated me so kind? , she had a dream and in her dream her mother said to flee temptation so Jane leaves Thornfield that night. she spend the night out because she doesn't have any money and no one would let her sleep in there home except St. John who invites her in and he ask her some questions like what your name and she lied to them and said her name was Jane Elliot.

     She stays in the house till she can stand on her own two feet, Rosamond Oliver provides her with a cottage she can stay in. Jane starts teaching but, she doesn't like her job. As nights go by she starts to have nightmares about Mr. Rochester but does not see him. She discovers that her uncle John Eyre has dies and left her 20,000 pounds. She finally tells the truth to St. John and tells him he real name is Jane Eyre. Suddenly he says to her i am your cousin. Jane gets happy to finally have family. Jane decided to died the inheritance with her cousins so they each will get 5,000 pounds. St. John tries to pressure Jane into marrying him but she cant because she still loves Mr. Rochester.

    Jane goes to look for Mr. Rochester and when he see's him runs into his arms and finds out what has happened and Bertha set the house on fire Mr. Rochester managed to save the lives of his servants and himself but Bertha threw herself from the roof and the fire was all around her. Rochester lost a hand and went blind. In the end the both marry with witnesses around except for the priest. she writes about her peaceful life with him and they love each other tremendously.                                                                                   

"Reader, I married him. A quiet wedding we had: he and I, the parson and clerk, were alone present. when we got back from church, I went into the kitchen of the manor-house, where Mary was cooking the dinner, and John cleaning the knives, and I said: 'Mary, I have been married to Mr. Rochester this morning" (Bronte 382).                                                            

This last part of the book was so breathe taking finding out that Mr. Rochester was married to another women named Bertha and Jane finds out the day of her wedding then Jane running finally leaving and making a living. She then lives with St. John who at the end she realizes that he was her cousin. Her Uncle died and left her money. Then she was pressured by St. John to marry him but she couldn't lie to herself she was still in love with Mr. Rochester. when she saw him she ran into his arms, and they got married with no one there. It works out better when they got married by themselves she didn't have to become stressed about money and didn't have to worry about more disasters escalating. This was a romantic love story and i recommend it to everyone who loves loves stories.

Forth Roar: JANE EYRE

Jane Eyre: Charlotte Bronte

(169- 303)

      As we look into the more about Jane Eyre she is very helpful and self-determined but, after her escalating romance with Mr. Rochester she becomes more open to others and to herself so she goes to get her fortune read in the library. The gypsy women seemed to really catch Jane's attention because Jane enters in her trace and it seemed like the Gypsy knew a lot about Jane. The Gypsy told her that jane is very close to happiness, she also told Jane that Rochester was not as rich as it may seem. But the funny thing about this gypsy is that her voice starts to deepen and in reality the Gypsy was Mr. Rochester in disguise. Jane gets mad, and well the real Gypsy arrived he looked kind of frightened because he was afraid that this might have a chance to ruin things for the future with Jane before things even erupt.

     That same night Jane was scared because someone had a cry for help, but Mr. Rochester said that it was just a servant who had a nightmare. After that everyone returns to there bed, but Mr. Rochester went to Jane's room and asked her if he can use her help and ask her if she is afraid of blood. He asked her this because Mr. Mason was stabbed in the arm and he asked her to watch over Mr. Mason while he gets help. He asked Mr. Mason and Jane not to talk to each other so all they do is stare at each other. After Mr. Rochester gets help he sends Jane to go get a potion downstairs and then gives it to him. After that Jane and Mr. Rochester have a little chat about what happened. He tells Jane about him marrying Blanche and if she will be his salvation but, before she could answer it he ran of.

     Jane seems to be having a lot of dreams about children she believes that having dreams about children is an Omen. She discover that her cousin John Reed has commiteed suicide, her aunt Mrs. Reed had suffered from a stroke, Eliza and Georgiana become nuns. Jane tries to be friends with Mrs. Reed knowing that she is about to die, that cynical aunt wont let them. At midnight Mrs. Reed ends up dieing in her sleep.

    Jane and Mr. Rochester have finally talked about this new impediment they have come across and Mr. Rochester agrees to marry Blanche, but then jane opens up to him and tells him she has an undying love for Mr. Rochester, and on the stop he surprises her and asked her to marry him. She accepts and then he kisses her. When they star preparing for the wedding things dont go as planed. Mrs. Fairfax does not support the wedding. Jane feels unsettled and scared because she looks at this as a fairy tale and she isnt ready for all this. Mr. Rochester tells her that she can have anything she wants he will dress her jewels. She has the pre wedding jitters and she writes to her uncle John Eyre and asked him to give her some of the inheritance money so that she can put it towards the wedding and feel less uncomfortable.

"All day yesterday I was very busy, and very happy in my ceaseless bustle; for I am not, as you seem to think, troubled by any haunting fears about the new sphere, etc cetera: I think it a glorious thing to have the hope of living with you, because I love you" ( Bronte  239).

As I reading this part of the book I was stunned of how much Mr. Rochester is interested in Jane. He disguised himself in Gypsy clothing to tell her future funny thing this is he is going to be in her future as  a husband. I think he was just going to marry Blanche just to make Jane jealous and finally confess because breaking up with Blanche was not very hard for him to do at all he just continued on with it and immediately started planing for the wedding. Jane feels like he's drowning her in gifts and she feels uncomfortable because of that because she would want to help him out now.

Third Roar: JANE EYRE

Summary:

     As Jane starts out her new life she moves to Thornfield and finds a job working for Mr. Rochester. Mr. Rochester travels a lot and learns the work to Mrs. Fairfax, but Jane is giving the job to tutor his daughter Adele who is an eight year old french girl. Mr. Rochester is a very wealthy man who spoils his daughter, but Jane soon finds out about the anger managment history in the family that is hard to understand. As Jane settles in her new life she finds her new home very comforable and coozy. He student that she tutor is a very smart young girl.

       When Mr. Rochester returns from his trip he invites Jane and Adele for tea and he starts to like her but Jane thinks that he is changeful and abrupt. Rochester was never the favorite of the family he was always an outcast when his father dies he inherited everything to his brother and when his brother dies is when Mr. Rochester inherited everything. One night when Mr. Rochester was in his after dinner mood he tells Jane and Adele to come and see his he gives Adele a gift shes been wanting for a long time and he starts talking to Jane and ask her if she thinks hes handsome she quickly says no and he took he remark and got drunk after that. Then he forces he to stay with him and they shared a sinful momment together. Adele mentions her mother Jane and Mr. Rochester promised to tell Jane about that situation later on. try started a realtionship with eachother and one night asJane was sleeping she smelled something burning and it was in Mr. Rochester Room and she turned out the fire and saved his life. She didnt kno who turned on the fire and it was wasnt Mr. Rochester because he was sleeping. A hard mystery to figure out. She starts developing feeling for Mr. Rochester she knows a lot about him especially his past relationship with Adele mother who he dated but he then found out that she was married. Adele isnt really his daughter but hes raising her to make sure she grows up properly and her mother left her. Jane feels that she wants to be there for him whenever he needed her.

"He then said that she was the daughter of a french opera-dancer, Celine Verens, towards whom he had once cherished what he called a grande passion. This passion Celine had professed to return with even superior ardour. He thought himself her idol; ugly as he was: he believed, as he said, that she preffered his 'taille d'athlete to the elegance of the Apollo Belviere" (Bronte 120).

Reaction:

Personally I loved this section of the book because theres love involved, I strongly feel that they will fall deeply in love because of the fact that they shared past experiences and to him it was love at first sight, even though she didnt feel the same way she is developing feelings for him because she found out more about him and she saved his life. Not to mention they shared a night of sins. I think they;re something they been looking for. Life is becoming so much better for Jane and hopefully she and Mr. Rochester will become a couple. My only concern is how Adele will take it?, Does Adele know that he isn't her father? , and Who made the fire appear in Mr. Rochester's room ?

Second Roar: JANE EYRE

Summary :

       As I countinued reading Jane Eyre, Jane starts settling in her new home The Lowood school and we left off finding out that the Lowood is a charity school for girls. Jane had a jaundiced view on the school. Sometimes they didnt allow the girls to take showers, they arent giving enough food, and are coerced to go to church. Nonetheless, she has Helen to keep her company and at least she has a friend because back in the Reed's household she did not have a friend. Jane enjoyed Helen's company especially Helen's meticulous beliefs. For example Helen strongly believed in loving her enemies especially when Ms. Scratcherd castigated Helen for nothing at all.

       After a while Mr. Brocklehurst remebers his aunt telling him that Jane has a tendency of lying which is not true. To pucnish her of that he makes her repeat after him and say in front of the entire school that she is a liar. Everyone was forbidden to talk to her even Helen, but Helen would smile at Jane in the Hallway. Jane wants to give up and breaks out crying but she goes to a teacher Ms. Temple and Jane tells her about her childhood and how she was mistreadted by her Aunt and her children. She realtes to how thats all happening again here at the Lowood school. Ms. Temple believes her so she writed to Mr. Lloyd and tells him to check her story to see if it was true and Jane came out innocent and finally everyone at Lowood knew that Jane was not a liar. Jane felt very happy that her reputation wasnt completely destroyed. Life at Lowood seems to be getting better, during springtime girls at Lowood were being introduced to a diesease called typhus but, Jane did not get exposed to the diesease she spends her time playing with her friend Mary. Helen is sick and is slowly dieing. One night Jane sneeks to see Helen and Helen tells her she is in little pain and that her time is almost up. Jane hugs her the rest of the night and during the night helen dies. This was a sad lost for Jane because Helen always made things better for Jane especially when she arrived to Lowood.

       One of the causes of the girls being exposed to this diesease was that the bad treatment that Mr. Brocklehurst gave the girls were one of the causes of typhus. He ended up getting fired and they sent new people in to run the school. Everyone becaame happy because they were being treated very well. Janes decides she wants to move on with her life and shes going to leave the Lowood school but before that Bessie comes and keeps her up to date with what going on in the Reed's household and Georgiana wants to run away with a man she fell in love with. Most importantly Jane fathers brothe John Eyre came to visit Jane seven years ago but could not come to Lowood to see her.

Quote:

"While disease had thus become an inhabitant of Lowood, and death its frequent visitor; while there was gloom and fear within its walls; while its rooms and passages steamed with hospital smells, the drug and the pastille striving vainly to overcome the effluvia of mortality, that bright May shone unclouded over the bold hills and beautiful woodland out of doors" (Bronte 65).

Reaction:

    My reaction towards this part of the book is I see a pattern in her life, theres always someone who shows a strong sense of anathema toward Jane, one person who really cares about her and suddently the only person who cares for her dies. For example, Aunt Reed and Mr. Brocklehurst despise and makes Jane;s life miserable. Her Uncle and Helen who tried to make things better for her both ended up passing away and left her living alone in the world. Then a opus turn corrupted the pattern and Ms. Temple and she helped Jane clear her name as being a liar that made people not want to socialize with her. Life is getting better for Jane because her surroundings are finally letting her live her life. Instead of keeping her in a shelter of chaos.

JANE EYRE

Jane Eyre by: Charlotte Bronte

Summary:

         As I began to read Jane Eyre, it tells us about the setting of the novel. It is November and along came a cold winter and a the hardest rain. Jane Eyre lives with her family the Reeds. Jane is an orphan and in the Reed family there are Mrs. Reed who is her aunt, John, Eliza, Georgiana who are her cousins. Mrs. Reed did not want Jane to play with her cousins. John and Jane had conflicts since the beggining. John would always come towards her with violence and Jane feels as if her aunt is blind and death because she never sees him hitting her at least once. John makes fun of Jane because shes an orphan and thinks that the only reason she is here is because her mothers charity. Jane is usually a quiet and calm girl , but since John kept chaffing her she gae in they start fighting. Mrs. Reed uses nepotism when picking who started the fight and always thinks that Jane srted the fight. Afeter they fight Mrs. Reed sends her two servants Miss Abbott and Bessie Lee to lock her up in a room. When Jane goes in the room she looks at herself in the mirror, she starts having flasblack to when her Uncle Reed brought her Gateshead, his house after her parents died. Uncle Reed ordereed his wife to raise Jane and if she were of her own children. In which Jane is not treated very kindly. Jane's thought start playing with her mind and see's the ghost of her Uncle coming to punish Mrs. Reed because she has not done what she promised him. Jane screams because she has seen a ghost and the aunt does nothing because she thoguth she was trying to get out of her punishment. Jane faints because of how scared she is. When she wakes up shes in the care of Mr. Lloyd who is the family's kind apothecary. Jane isnt well and stays in bed the next day as well. Then they suggest to the aunt to send Jane to school where she can find felicity. Jane starts finding some family history.

        Jane is going to attend an all girls school Lowood run by a man called Mr. Brocklehurst. But before Jane went to school Bessie tells her stories ans sings her songs. She arrives in school and its a dark and rainy day she gets to know her new land. The next day she meet her classmates and she meets a girl named Helen and Helen tells Jane that the Lowood is a charity school maintained for female orphans. The Reed family made her believe that they were paying for the school and infact they paid nothing to get her there. Jane felt unloved but she was happy she was no where near them.

Quote:

"I was a discord in Gateshead Hall; I was like nobody there; I had nothing in harmony with Mrs. Reed or her children, or her chosen vassalge" (Bronte 12).

Reaction:

          My reaction of the novel was that Jane lives a very sad and dreary life. Both her parents died, the only family that loved her died which was Uncle Reed and she has family that is alive that hate her and dont give one bite about her. Before her uncle Reed died he told his Wife Mrs. Reed to take care of Jane like she was her own. Mrs. Reed didnt she treated her badly locking her into rooms and not thinking that she would actually be in trouble after she cries and yells for help in a room. Mrs. Reed contradicts herself because how is she going to be apart of charity which deals with helping people and treat family so badly. That's inhumame and Jane deserves happiness, she hasnt been happy since. As she goes to a new school, she hought her school was a rich school but after having a chat with one of the students she finds out that it is a charity school and she feels very betrade because she thought that finally she was gien something worth being happy. Jane struggles to much in her life. She reminds me of Cinderella a little bit except she isn't considered as a maid in the Reed household because there are serants there already.
